The European Football Union Allows Ukrainian Symbols in Stadiums, Contrary to Recent Incident

The European Football Union does not prohibit hanging Ukrainian symbols in stadiums.

The scandal with the flag of Ukraine at the Olympic Stadium in Istanbul during the Champions League final, when one of the stewards tried to take away a blue and yellow canvas from a Manchester City fan, has become one of the most discussed topics in recent days.

The behavior of the arena employee was a big surprise, because there is no ban on the use of Ukrainian symbols in stadiums by European football authorities. Permission to carry the flags of Ukraine to the stands was confirmed by UEFA, reports The Guardian.

The Union called the incident with the Ukrainian flag unfortunate and reported that the blue-and-yellow canvas was immediately returned to the English fan as soon as one of the security leaders of the arena in Istanbul found out about the incident.

UEFA clarified that the organizers and local law enforcement agencies are responsible for safety at the match.

“It was an unfortunate personal initiative (to remove the flag – ed.) One of the security officers of the local police”the organization said.

The Union added that they have been actively demonstrating calls for peace in Ukraine at various matches under the auspices of the organization since the very beginning of the war.

Recall that the incident with the Ukrainian flag occurred on June 10 at the Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, where English Manchester City and Italian Inter played in the Champions League final. A video was published on the Web, as an arena employee, without explanation, tries to take a yellow-blue canvas from a City fan.

At the same time, the security service did not have any questions for the fan, who unfurled the flag of the Russian Federation in the stands.
