Brussels wants Moscow to immediately end illegal hostilities in Ukraine
The European Council tonight approved new sanctions against Russia over the invasion of Ukraine. Sanctions include measures in the fields of energy, visa policy, finance, transport, dual-use items.
The Heads of State and Government of the EU countries instruct the European Commission to prepare more sanctions, including Belarus. The Commission will have to propose emergency measures, including in the field of energy.
The European Council condemns as strongly as possible the unprovoked and unjustified illegal military aggression against Ukraine, according to the adopted conclusions. Russia will bear responsibility, sanctions will have severe consequences, the text adds.
The European Council calls on Russia to immediately cease illegal hostilities, to unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces and military equipment from the entire territory of Ukraine, to end the disinformation campaign and cyber attacks. Russia has been urged to provide humanitarian access to those affected by the hostilities.
The European Council calls on no country to recognize or support the self-proclaimed “republics” in eastern Ukraine.
