The European Commission proposes a nine-month validity period for Covid-19 certificates / Article

However, the EC will not yet propose an expiry date for Covid-19 certificates issued after a maintenance dose of the vaccine.

The new order is expected could enter into force from 10 January of the following year.

Higher vaccination rates should be achieved

The nine-month period of certification will give countries and citizens enough time to organize a maintenance dose of Covid-19. It will also be possible to see information about the extra dose in the vaccination certificate in the future, said European Union Justice Commissioner Didier Reinders.

‘Member States should accept vaccination certificates not older than nine months from the date of completion of the initial vaccination. Thereafter, the certificates will no longer be recognized if the primary vaccine has not been received. The Commission does not currently intend to limit the shelf life of vaccines, as such people are likely to be protected for longer. “

“We have vaccinated more than 65% of the EU’s population, but that is not enough. Too many people are not yet protected. In order for everyone to travel and live as safely as possible, we need to achieve significantly higher vaccination rates – urgently,” he said. Commissioner for Security Stella Kirjakidu.

Covid-19 certification is not required for travel

The European Commission states that travelers with a Covid-19 certificate should not be subject to additional restrictions, such as quarantine or a negative Covid-19 test.

The EC concludes that there are currently no data available on the efficacy of a maintenance dose of Covid-19 vaccine in preventing coronavirus transmission, but available information suggests that a maintenance dose may provide longer protection than the primary vaccination course. Therefore, the EC does not currently propose a period of validity for certificates that will be issued after the maintenance fee.

The EC emphasizes that obtaining a Covid-19 certificate should not become a prerequisite for traveling within the European Union, but that additional requirements may apply to people without such a certificate, such as quarantine and Covid-19 testing.
