The European Commission has ordered 160 million doses of vaccine from Moderna

The American company said last week that testing showed a success rate of 94.5 percent for its vaccine. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is already examining the application for conditional registration of this vaccine for the Union market.

According to von der Leyen, the agency, like the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccines, which have a similar effect, could be approved in mid-December.

“Once the vaccine is approved as safe and effective, all Member States will receive it at the same time, according to the size of the population and under the same conditions,” said the head of the EC.

In addition to these companies, the executive already has contracts with manufacturers AstraZeneca, Sanofi-GSK, Johnson & Johnson and CureVac. In addition, according to von der Leyen, the EC is negotiating with the seventh manufacturer.

If all vaccines are approved by the EMA, Brussels will be able to distribute more than a billion doses among member states. A small amount intended for healthcare professionals or risk groups could be available at the turn of the year, and the EC expects a large distribution from around the spring.

According to Monday’s announcement by the Minister of Health Jan Blatný (for YES), the Czech Republic has so far ordered a vaccine for 5.5 million people through the EC.
