The representatives of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) state that although it no longer represents a global threat, COVID has not disappeared and is a disease that continues to cause many hospitalizations and deaths among the population.Dr. Edoardo Colzani ECDC expert, Dr. Edoardo Colzani, believes that at the moment the greatest danger would be the neglect of COVID-19 and other respiratory infections that continue to circulate. “Covid continues to circulate in the community at the primary care level, it is indeed still here and here to stay. (…) The biggest risk is to indulge ourselves in thinking that the virus is gone. COVID has not gone away. Of course, it no longer represents a threat in the global emergency situation, but it is a disease that will remain, just like the flu, just like RSV”, said Edoardo Colzani. The ECDC specialist mentioned that there are several variants of the virus that causes COVID, but that they are under research and none should be a cause for concern. Edoardo Colzani warned about the possibility that in the future new pandemics could appear. “There is a possibility that a coronavirus, other than COVID, may appear . It is certainly a possibility. There is a possibility for the flu, too, that we have a virus that could cause a pandemic, as has happened in the past. It is also possible that another virus, another family of viruses, which have not caused pandemics before, will cause one. (…) Nature is always capable of surprising us. (…) The coronavirus is clearly a concern. In fact, in the last 20 years we have seen the famous SARS-CoV-1, which in the past was called SARS and which caused a significant number of infections, but fortunately not a pandemic. Then we had Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, which was caused by another coronavirus known as MERS, which is still circulating, and then we had COVID. So it is possible that a new coronavirus appears in humans”, declared Edoardo Colzani. The doctor mentioned that passing through the disease is not a solution and that people should not take the risk of infection naturally, just because in this way I think they can get a strong immunity. ECDC representatives emphasized the importance of continuing vaccination and gave assurances that the vaccines available on the market at the moment offer sufficient protection. They recommended that citizens, especially those who belong to risk categories, receive the dose of the vaccine against COVID at the same time as the flu vaccine. Regarding the risks of vaccines against COVID, ECDC experts stated that they are lower than the benefits. European Center for the Prevention and Control of Diseases is organizing between November 8 and 9 a series of presentations related to public health issues at the European level, among the topics covered are those related to respiratory infections, tuberculosis, hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections, diseases caused by mosquitoes, disease prevention and control among people who inject drugs or antimicrobial resistance, writes Agerpres.
