The EU has also taken action against other bloc countries, including France, Italy and Romania, in terms of air quality.
The EC has stated that it will take Bulgaria to the EU court for breaching its restrictions on fine particulate matter pollution between 2015 and 2019, although the court has already ordered the Bulgarian government to resolve the issue in 2017.
Bulgaria may be fined for non-compliance with a previous court decision.
When it comes to air pollution with fine particulate matter, Bulgaria is one of the biggest sinners in the EU, the EC said.
EU regulations have required Member States to limit air pollution by fine particulate matter since 2005. However, most of the bloc countries will not meet their targets in this area this year.
The EC will also take Greece to court, as air pollution by fine particulate matter in Thessaloniki has been above the limit for all but one year since 2005.
Efforts by the Greek authorities to resolve the problem have so far been insufficient and unsatisfactory, the EC said.
Air pollution is the biggest environmental risk to human health in Europe. Fine particulate matter pollution in 2018 contributed to the premature death of some 379,000 people in the EU, which is 13% less than in 2009, according to a recent report by the European Environment Agency.
The EC has also sued Poland for insufficient forest protection.
