The EU will impose additional customs duties on electric cars made in China

Additional European Union (EU) customs duties on electric cars made in China will come into force this week, the European Commission (EC) announced on Tuesday.

These charges will be in addition to the current 10% tax on electric vehicles imported from China.

The decision will come into effect after it is published in the EU’s Official Journal on Wednesday. The additional fees will come into effect from Thursday.

An investigation by the European Commission (EC) found that Chinese state subsidies are creating unfair competition for European car manufacturers.

The new fees will be valid for five years.

The rates will be different for the products of different manufacturers.

The new tariffs will also apply to electric cars made by foreign companies in China For example, a 7.8% tax will be applied to electric vehicles made by “Tesla” in China.

Chinese car giant Geely, one of the country’s largest electric vehicle manufacturers, will face an additional tax of 18.8%.

Several EU member states do not support the new taxes, including Germany and Hungary. But a vote in early October failed to block it because at least 15 countries representing 65% of the bloc’s population would be needed.

Several major European carmakers, including Germany’s Volkswagen, have criticized the EC’s approach and urged Brussels to resolve the issue through negotiations.

Negotiations are ongoing between the two sides and the tariffs could be raised if an agreement is reached, but Chinese and EU officials have indicated that there are currently significant differences between the positions of the two sides.

In response to the upcoming decision on additional charges for the introduction of electric cars. China announced on October 8 that it will impose temporary tariffs on brandy and cognac imported from the EU.

Beijing has also launched investigations into EU subsidies on some dairy and pork products imported into China.

Trade tensions between China and the EU are not limited to electric cars, as Brussels is also investigating Chinese subsidies for solar panels and wind turbines.

The EU is not alone in imposing high tariffs on Chinese electric cars.

Canada and the US have imposed much higher tariffs of 100% on Chinese electric car imports in recent months.
