The EU is ready for the contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to end at the end of 2024, said Kadri Simson, member of the European Commission (EC) for Energy. According to her, in a year the European Union will have alternative options for supplying blue fuel to the continent.
I informed the ministers that I would be able to present them with alternatives when the agreement between Russia and Ukraine on gas transit ends in just a year
– said the European official.
Simson promised that the EC will provide support to EU member states that will be affected by Kyiv’s refusal to further transit Russian gas. The European Commission member is confident that Brussels “has enough time to prepare for this new situation.”
The transit contract between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom was signed on December 30, 2019. They provide for transit of 40 billion cubic meters per year in 2021–2024.
Simpson did not disclose the details of the EC’s plan. Europe has few options to replace the missing gas volumes after abandoning Russian gas – LNG from the Middle East and the USA. However, it is unknown how much the EU economy may shrink over the coming year.
