The EU is switching from WhatsApp to Signal – pretty bumpy

28. May 2021

Even if it was not certain, the EU Commission has so far communicated with journalists and other contact persons via WhatsApp. Even the Council of Ministers used the service. Now you switch to Signal – pretty bumpy.

While Signal stood next to WhatsApp a few years ago with only a few functions, today it is a very good alternative that also scores with data protection and privacy. This is what the computer experts from “Chip” write.

Now the EU is also relying on this alternative. So far, she has distributed her messages to the press in various chat groups – and even sent links to Zoom meetings. That was not very safe, especially data protection is questionable.

Now everyone is switching to Signal. “In the coming days, the Council of EU will change the instant messaging platform it uses to share information with journalists: we will move our groups from WhatsApp to Signal“it says in the Council of Ministers.

No reason is given – which is amazing. After all, the EU prides itself on having set a world standard for data protection with the GDPR.

If that’s true, WhatsApp shouldn’t become unsafe overnight – or the EU should explain what’s going on here and why that happened (i.e. talk about Facebook). But she doesn’t do that.

Instead, all journalists accredited in Brussels (around 1000) now have to register in the various new signal groups (four in my case) and wait.

Because there is still no confirmation of successful (and hopefully) safe admission …
