On Monday, the foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) member states approved the extension of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia in 2014 after the aggression in Ukraine for six months.
The ambassadors of the EU member states agreed on 30 June to extend the sanction for six months until the end of January.
Sanctions, which are regularly extended by half a year, are aimed at Russia’s financial, energy and defense sectors. Their relaxation or cancellation is linked to the implementation of the so-called Minsk peace agreements.
In February 2014, Russia occupied the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula. Since April 2014, Moscow-backed and armed militants, saboteurs and soldiers of Russian regular units have occupied large areas in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions of eastern Ukraine.
