The EU is preparing for a sudden halt in Russian gas supplies

The publication got acquainted with the draft document, according to which the European Commission sees a significant risk that Russia will stop fuel supplies this year. The developed recommendations will help reduce the negative consequences of this by a third. The adoption of the document is scheduled for July 10, although its content may still be changed.

The EU plan provides an opportunity for the governments of member states replace fuel in industry and energyto help save gas, and hold auctions or tenderswhere governments are stimulating consumption cuts by large consumers like industries.

The document also includes the development of an information campaign on lowering the temperature of heating and air conditioningas well as mandatory restrictions during the crisis level.

EU gas storage operators have calculated that in the event of a complete cessation of supplies from Russia in July, gas storage volumes could drop to 65-71% in early November, well below the target of 80%. If this happens later – in October or in subsequent months – the risk of a rupture would be less. At the same time, countries would have less time to resolve the situation before the start of the heating season.

“The gas situation in the EU is at a critical stage,” the commission’s document says.
