The sanctions were agreed by Member States on Wednesday and will take effect today.

Mr Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus for 26 years, was not on the EU’s original sanctions list of 40 people responsible for falsifying the presidential election and cracking down on protests. These people have been denied entry to the EU and their funds in the EU have been frozen.

As of today, the same sanctions apply to Lukashenko, his son and 13 other officials.

The EU holds Lukashenko and his son responsible for the repression of the state apparatus before and after the presidential election. The EU also holds Lukashenko responsible for the exclusion of key opposition candidates from the elections, illegal arrests, and violence against protesters and journalists.

Lukashenko’s son Viktor is a national security adviser.

Sanctions have also been imposed on the head of Lukashenko’s presidential office, the head of the security service and the head of the presidential press service.
