The EU has started building a gas pipeline that bypasses Russia – 2024-08-08 07:59:24

/ world today news/ In the Greek city of Thessaloniki, on Tuesday (May 17), the official start of the construction of the Trans-Adriatic Gas Pipeline (TAP) was given, which will allow natural gas to be supplied to Europe through Greece, bypassing Russia, the news agencies reported.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the EU and the US State Department, as well as representatives of the authorities in Greece, Turkey, Albania, Italy and Bulgaria.

The Trans-Adriatic gas pipeline is part of the “Southern Gas Corridor”, through which natural gas from the Caspian region will reach Europe without the participation of Russia. It is planned to deliver blue fuel from the Azerbaijani field “Shah Deniz” to Europe (Southern Italy) via Georgia, Turkey, Greece, Albania, etc.

The gas pipeline is expected to have a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters per year. The value of the project is $45 billion. Companies from Azerbaijan, Italy, Belgium, Spain and Sweden have equal shares in the construction.

The construction of TAP was approved at the beginning of March 2016. At the time, EU authorities announced that the new pipe would help diversify the EU’s energy supply and not distort competition in the internal market.
