EU Press Secretary Peter Stano announced that Brussels has summoned the Belarusian ambassador to protest the unacceptable detention of the EU plenipotentiary for two several hours.
“This unlawful detention of our diplomat constitutes a grave violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (..) and undermines him [diplomātu] stability in Belarus, “Stano claimed.
Belarusian police arrested an EU diplomat following browsing a court. At the demo, “ten political prisoners have been sentenced to unreasonably long and harsh sentences,” Stano said.
“We strongly demanded an clarification of this critical incident and pressured that it simply cannot occur yet again,” Stano added.
EU-Belarus relations have deteriorated significantly considering that the “re-election” of Belarusian authoritarian chief Alexander Lukashenko as president and the brutal crackdown on opposition protests subsequent the elections.
The EU has imposed extensive sanctions on Belarus, together with Lukashenko, punishing Minsk for its repression of the opposition and its part in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
