The EU Council approves a loan of EUR 504 million for Hungary –

The Council of the European Union has approved a EUR 504 million loan for Hungary as part of the EU’s SURE program to protect jobs in countries affected by the coronavirus epidemic, announced the Ministry of Finance on Saturday.

The European Commission’s Temporary Assistance to Reduce the Risk of Unemployment in an Emergency (SURE) program was launched on August 24 and has disbursed a total of € 87.8 billion to 17 member states. The program was created to support countriesthose affected by the coronavirus epidemic by providing loans to support short-term work programs and other activities.

Unemployment in Hungary is increasing

Applicants are expected to receive around half of the funding this year and the other half in early 2021.

The loan, which is available on favorable terms, will refinance the measures introduced after February 1, 2021 to protect workplaces and health at work, the ministry said.

In the statement, the Ministry of Finance noted that the Hungarian government had already provided assistance to around 900,000 workers through grants to support their positions in the labor market or through training support.
