Diplomats revealed Wednesday that European Union (EU) members agreed on sanctions against Iran for violently cracking down on protests sparked by the death of a woman after she was arrested for wearing non-Islamic clothing by its authorities.

Four EU diplomats assured the AFP news agency that a political agreement on sanctions was reached on Wednesday and that they will be officially adopted at the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday.
This was stated on Wednesday by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen
“the time has come to sanction those” who are “responsible for the oppression of women” in Iran.
“Such shocking violence cannot go unanswered,” he stressed.
More detailed information on the planned sanctions is not available, but the United States, Great Britain and Canada have already imposed separate sanctions against the Iranian regime’s security institutions.
The United States and Britain have imposed sanctions on the so-called morality police, which last month arrested Mahs Amini, 22.
Amini was arrested by the moral police for his “non-Islamic” clothes and taken to the police station. As police explained, Amini developed heart problems there and died three days after her arrest. Amini’s family members and activists question the police version of events and suspect that the police beat Amini.
Iranian coroners announced that Amini’s death was related to “brain tumor surgery at the age of eight”.
Canada announced last week that it will permanently ban more than 10,000 members of the Iranian regime from entering the country, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which has been involved in cracking down on protests.
MEPs called for Iranian officials, including those linked to the moral police, to be included in the bloc’s sanctions list, which includes an EU entry ban and freezing of assets under the bloc’s jurisdiction.
In April 2011, the EU imposed sanctions against Iran in relation to human rights violations. In March 2012, the sanctions were supplemented by stopping the supply of equipment to Iran that the regime could use to crack down on the population or for electronic espionage.
The EU plans to introduce sanctions at a time when the bloc is coordinating negotiations to renew the 2015 international agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear program.
The EU’s highest representative for foreign affairs and security policy issues, Žuzeps Borel, announced that the negotiations have reached a standstill.
