The EU agrees on tough sanctions against Russia

“These sanctions cover the financial sector, the energy and transport sectors, dual-use goods, as well as export controls and export financing, visa policy, the blacklisting of additional natural persons and new inclusion criteria,” the summit said in a final document.

The EU will take immediate action to impose sanctions.

There is no consensus on disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT system

Disconnecting Russia from SWIFT would make it almost impossible for financial institutions to send money to or from Russia, making it very difficult for Russian businesses to deal with foreign customers and have a real impact on the Russian economy.

Poland and the Baltic states wanted the issue to be included in the sanctions package adopted by the EU tonight, while Germany, Italy, Hungary and Cyprus, which have significant economic relations with Russia, did not support such a move.

Moscow threatens to retaliate

Jauns.lv has already reported that Moscow on Thursday promised a strong response to the sanctions that the European Union (EU) is going to impose on Russia.

“In accordance with the principle of reciprocity, which is fundamental in international law, we will take a strong response,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
