Máxima’s life is saturated with written and unwritten rules. In the series ‘How does it sound?’ we therefore dive into the etiquette books. Today: the dress code ‘morning coat/dress’.
We can depict King Willem-Alexander in a dark blue suit with a light blue tie. But sometimes, when the occasion is very special, a little more is expected of him. Then the script contains the dress code ‘morning coat’.
What does that mean? First of all, a morning coat. You can recognize the garment by the color (black, very occasionally gray), the rounded panels and the single button.

Also included: a shirt (with invisible closure, double cuffs and a horizontal collar) and a waistcoat. Gray striped trousers and tie complete the picture.

As with white tie/black tie, the name of the dress code does not mention anything about the do’s and don’ts of the ladies. Fortunately, Máxima now knows what it is like. If the dress code morning coat/dress appears on an invitation, the queen wears a dress or skirt that extends over the knee. The materials are chic (no denim), there is no deep neckline and distinguishing marks are welcome. In many cases a hat is also worn. In short: chic through and through.

Occasions
In the United Kingdom, the morning coat regularly appears on an invitation. Above we see Willem-Alexander and Máxima during the state visit to the United Kingdom. During the welcome ceremony in the presence of the Queen, King Willem-Alexander wore a morning suit. Later that day, during the wreath laying ceremony and various (political) meetings, he wore an ordinary suit.
Because dress codes usually offer more freedom to women, Máxima did not have to dress up. Her robe manteau by Claes Iversen went well with the less formal dress code tenue de ville (more about that later).
Bee baptisms and marriages the king is also sometimes expected to wear a morning suit. in Florence, during Carolina & Albert’s wedding, he wore a gray one.

At the New Year’s reception for the Dutch guests, the king wears a ‘normal’ suit, read: tenue de ville. For the reception of the diplomatic corps, things can be a bit more chic and the king wears a morning coat.

At funerals the waistcoat is usually black, just like the tie.
