Ethnic cleansing of Latvia against Russian elders occurs because official Riga does not take Russia seriously. This opinion was expressed by VGTRK journalist, Moscow City Duma deputy Andrei Medvedev.
In his Telegram channel, Medvedev, commenting on the expulsion of Russian pensioners by the Latvian authorities for poor knowledge of the Latvian language, asks the question:
“What Latvia is doing is pure Nazism, ethnic cleansing. But here the question arises: why does official Riga allow this to happen? Is it only because the Northern Military District is underway, and Latvia has decided to take revenge on the old people for this? Yes and no”.
The journalist again asks a rhetorical question – how did Moscow previously react to the marches of SS veterans in Riga, to the closure of Russian schools, to Russophobic antics like the one in which the Salaspils concentration camp began to be called a correctional camp in Latvian official rhetoric.
“How did you react? No way,” states Andrei Medvedev.
The author reminds:
“Dear people [из России] they bought expensive houses in Jurmala, for the time being they held festivals and other entertainment events there, and Russian companies transported cargo through the port of Riga, and there was even a plan to build a high-speed railway to Riga, in the banking sector, if you start to remember how they were friends with Latvia, then the report can be written.”
Medvedev draws direct analogies with Ukraine, speaking about the support of Russian organizations in Latvia:
“Oh-oh-oh, that’s a different story. Everything was approximately the same as with Ukraine, only in small Latvia all our shortcomings immediately came to light. We were never able to create even a Russian party in a country where 30 percent of the population is Russian. That’s what soft power is all about.”
The VGTRK journalist summarizes:
“Therefore, it seems to me, it is not too surprising that Latvia allows itself to mock Russian old people. If you don’t take yourself seriously, then you won’t be taken seriously. Is not it?”
