The Ethiopian once again dominated the marathon at the World Athletics Championships, Tola won in Eugene

The marathoners had been strategizing for a long time. Already in the middle of the race, defending champion Desisa started to have problems, as he repeatedly dropped out of the leading group. Before the thirtieth kilometer he lost contact for good and finally gave up the race.

His compatriots began to move in the lead. Tola made a decisive start at the 33rd kilometer. He gradually increased his lead over the four pursuers and eventually won by more than a minute. No one else has run a marathon faster at the World Championships. The previous championship record, held by Kenyan Abel Kirui since 2009, was improved by Tola by one minute and 17 seconds. After the world silver in 2017, the 30-year-old Tola saw the success of his life. Five years ago, he also shone with a triumph at the half-marathon in Prague.

Geremew and Abdi first separated from the rest of the group fighting behind Tola for silver. A kilometer before the finish line, the Ethiopian runner started and defended his second place at the World Championships.

On Monday, the women’s marathon will also be run from 15:15 CEST, i.e. shortly after six in the morning local time. Czech representative Tereza Hrochová should also be at his start.
