The Ethics of Turning on the Highway: What You Should Know to Avoid Accidents on the Toll Road

Jakarta

The ethics of turning on the highway cannot be arbitrary. Recently, a Fortuner driver went viral when he made a turn when he was about to change lanes on the toll road. What should you do if you turn on the toll road?

In the viral video uploaded by the Instagram account @dascham_owner_indonesia, a black Fortuner car cuts the lane from right to left. The car was about to exit towards another toll gate but its position from the far right lane.

Suddenly the black Fortuner slowed down as he was about to head for the exit on the left side. But the traffic situation at that time there were other cars. There was a domino effect, almost a series of collisions. Luckily the driver behind him managed to anticipate the braking so that the accident was avoided.

Reflecting on this incident, a transportation and legal observer, AKBP (Purn) Budiyanto, former Head of Sub-Directorate of Gakkum Polda Metro Jaya, said that spontaneous movement when turning to turn has the potential for traffic accidents.

“Not a few of them will turn and reverse direction and make spontaneous movements by cutting, which of course will shock other road users and have the potential for traffic accidents,” said Budiyanto in his statement quoted Monday (3/7/2023).

Budiyanto revealed that changing lanes has been regulated in Law No. 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation article 112 paragraphs 1 and 2. In that article it is stated that drivers who wish to change lanes must be aware of their surroundings.

“Vehicle drivers who are going to change lanes or move sideways must observe the traffic situation in front, beside and behind the vehicle and give a signal,” reads article 112 paragraph 2.

Budiyanto also emphasized that motorists who do not comply with these rules, let alone causing accidents, must be prepared for the consequences in accordance with Article 25 of Law Number 22 of 2009.

“Rammor drivers who will turn or turn around without giving a signal with a directional light or hand signal constitute a traffic violation as stipulated in the criminal provisions of Article 294, shall be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of 1 (one) month or a fine of up to Rp. 250,000.” said Budiyanto.

Don’t just cut it when you leave the toll gate

Driving safety practitioner who is also the Senior Instructor Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI), Sony Susmana, emphasized that it is very dangerous if the driver stops suddenly because the toll exit is missed. According to him, when the toll road or exit has been missed, it is safest to leave at the next toll exit.

Sony also recommends that if you want to take a toll exit, make it a habit to drive in the left lane so it’s easy to read signs or directions.

In order not to miss the toll exit, Sony advises motorists to always plan their trip carefully. When conducting a convoy, socialize the itinerary to other convoy participants. Make rules when it comes to convoys.

“Emphasis not to violate traffic rules. When a vehicle has missed its turn, don’t stop and even go backwards or go crazy in the opposite direction. Just keep looking for the exit in front of it. It’s farther away, but that’s a consequence for mutual safety,” he said.
