The first verse that a teacher teaches his disciple out of the ten million sayings of the Prophet is very famous in the Islamic world and has been followed for fourteen centuries. All over the world hadith scholars teach this word to their disciples for the first time. These words are the declaration of the basic policy of Islam and the life attitudes of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The verse reads: ‘Allah, the Most Merciful, shows mercy to those who show mercy. Therefore show mercy to all the peoples of the earth; But Allah, the Exalted, will show mercy to you too’. The answer to why this hadith is the first to be narrated by the Guru to his disciples out of ten million words is enough for one to get to know Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
The message of the first verse of the Holy Quran is no different. The Qur’an, which begins by saying that it begins with the name of Allah, first introduces Allah to the world of creation with the name of Allah, ‘Rahman’. The meaning of this name and the policy contained in it are actually Islam and the Qur’an. Because this is the first word given out of more than six thousand small and big words. Many scholars have explained the name Rahman mentioned in the beginning of the Qur’an in many ways, but the most prominent one is the one who does good and mercy in this world to the guided and unguided, believers and non-believers alike.
This is the example that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) set in this world. The Qur’an repeatedly says about the Prophet (PBUH) that he was created as a mercy to all creatures in the world. This mercy and love was not limited to believers or to mere mortals. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) is a unique leader who showed great mercy that overflowed the entire universe. He taught only this mercy and love to his followers in food and sleep. This broad mercy is the eternal policy of Islam.
History will never forget the cruelties shown to the Prophet (PBUH) by the enemies of Makkah. For three years, the Prophet and his companions lived by eating only greens because of the attacks of the enemies. It was also because of these enemies that he had to flee to Madinah. But after seven years, things changed. The Macca victory was the moment when the enemies completely surrendered to the Prophet. Some people started running away from their homes, but the Prophet (PBUH) was making the biggest pardon announcement in history. ‘You go, everyone is completely free’. The hadith quoted by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) should be added here. Once, when the persecutions and attacks of the enemies in Makkah became very severe, a poor man came and asked the Prophet: O Prophet, why don’t you curse these enemies? Immediately the Prophet (PBUH) said, ‘I have not come to curse; Only out of mercy’. On another occasion, when the persecution of his enemies became too much for him to bear, he went to Tawaif outside Makkah to seek respite. The Prophet has some relatives there. But dashing all hopes, the children, elders and relatives of Twaif started pelting stones at the Prophet. When the returning Prophet (PBUH) rested on the way, Jibreel asked permission to come and destroy the enemies, but he took the stand that he should not take even the slightest action against them.
