A few years ago, a new tradition was established at the festival – the festival opens with a series of concerts Spiritual overturewhich is given a name this time Eternal light/Eternal Light. Shortly before the big premieres of drama and music theater and ambitious symphonic music concerts, the festival invites the public to sacred music concerts in a calmer atmosphere. Many have recognized them as the most valuable offering of the festival.
“To send light into the depths of the human heart,” is how Roberts Šumanis formulated the duty of artists. This summer’s opera and concert program in Salzburg will delve into the boundary conditions between light and darkness, sun and shadow, sadness and hope.
Cycle Spiritual overture fits into the tradition of church concerts. This year’s chosen theme symbolizes God’s eternal presence, the light that brings comfort and signals the end of suffering. Various versions of the requiem will be heard at the concerts. Spiritual overtures at the first concert on July 20, the SWR Symphony Orchestra of the Southwest German Radio in Stuttgart, under the direction of conductor Ingo Metzmacher, will play Olivjē Mesiāna Lightnings on the Beyond… – the last completed work of the great master, the performance of which requires 141 instruments. However, the composer did not aim to leave an overly monumental impression on the listeners, rather he sought the transparency of the transformation process of colors, sounds and forms: “I imagine myself in the dark at the curtain, and I am worried about what is behind it – resurrection, eternity and another life. .. I try to imagine what will happen next and conjure it up in this work.”
On July 20 and 21, there will be a concert production combining the mourning songs of Heinrich Schitz Musical Exequien and Sophia Gubaidulina, inspired by the prayer of Francis of Assisi The song of the sun for cello, choir and percussion. This production, directed by Peter Sellars, will feature an ensemble Los Angeles Master Chorale under the leadership of conductor Grant Gershon, cellist Julia Hagen and percussionists Christofs Ziecens and Bogdans Bečanu.
Spiritual overture covers a repertoire from Renaissance to contemporary music. This cycle will feature works by Orlando di Lasso, Thomas Louis de Victoria, Claudio Monteverdi, Agostino Stefani, Heinrich Ignatius Franz Bieber, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Johannes Brahms, Giacinto Schelsi, Gérard Grisé, Claude Vivier, Georg Ligeti, Luciano Berio, Salvatore Charrino and the opus of Wolfgang Riem. The program includes the works of two prominent artists of the 20th century, which they completed shortly before their death – a composition by the artist and composer John Cage One¹¹ “for a man with a camera solo” (sung by the ensemble Sound Forum Vienna, will be handled by Wen Carlson; directed by Henning Launer) and films by Derek Jarman Blue screening in the Collegiate Church of Salzburg.
In honor of the centenary of the Hungarian and Austrian composer Đerģs Ligeti, special attention will be paid to his works in Salzburg – the author’s music will be played throughout the festival. The spiritual overture will flow smoothly into the main program, the core of which, as always, is the resident orchestra of the festival – Vienna Philharmonic – concerts. Conductors Kristiāns Tīlemanis, Andris Nelsons, Ricardo Muti, Francis Velzers-Mests and Jakubs Hruša will stand at the helm.
Salzburg will also be heard from local groups Mozarteum orchestra and Camerata Salzburg (they will be conducted by Ivor Bolton, Roberto Gonzalez-Monjas, Jörgs Vidmanis, Adam Fischer, Antonello Manakorda, Manfred Honeck and Patricia Kopacinska). Nine more orchestras will visit the festival, and they will play under the direction of Jordi Saval, François Xavier Roth, Teodor Kurendz, Elima Chan, Daniel Barenboim and Kirill Petrenko. Andris Nelsons will not only conduct Vienna Philharmonic (August 5 and 6), but also the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which will close the festival program on August 31.
