JAKARTA – Humans can physically die, but the human soul is eternal. That’s the belief held by most people, now there is a theory and reason for it.
In many spiritual tradition and religion, the soul or consciousness becomes the essence of the personality of every animate being. More recently, however, the soul has been understood as the thinking part of the self, like mind or consciousness.
Soul and consciousness become one biggest mystery from various branches of knowledge. A new theory of the soul a few years ago was developed by several major physicists.
They put forward in the ‘Orch-OR’ Theory The theory for examining consciousness and the soul called ‘Orch-OR’ (ORCHestrated Objective Reduction). This research subject was developed since the 1990s by physicists Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff.
They found that consciousness arises within neurons and not through interactions between them. Penrose, known as a leading mathematician, physicist and cosmologist, received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for this theory. Orch-OR’ is currently only a theory but is believed to be testable and validated. This theory wants to prove that the physical properties of the brain are not determined by traditional mathematical formalism but by interesting principles of quantum mechanics.
The biological approach is also combined through the biological component of consciousness. According to Hameroff, the main structure of consciousness is the microtubule cells in the brain. Meanwhile, the quantum approach examines consciousness as a vibrating wave.
According to the ‘Orch-OR’ theory, consciousness is a wave that vibrates in the universe of subatomic particles (quantum physics is particle physics) and microtubules act as true quantum computers. This process converts vibrations into usable information.
