The cargo was found on March 21, when customs officers in Muga port scanned container cargo from Ecuador.

This is one of the largest shipments of cocaine Baltic and the Nordic regions. The retail value of the cargo would be around half a billion euros.

According to the head of the Drug Crime Service of the Investigation Department of the Tax and Customs Board, such a large amount is not intended for the Estonian market because there are not so many consumers. The port of Muga was one of the stops on the cargo ship, and most of the containers on board were destined for Russia.

It has already been reported that last year around Christmas in Riga in two stores 168 kilograms of cocaine were found in banana boxes. In January 2019, a cargo with 42 cardboard boxes sent from Ecuador was found in a private house in Koknese region. The boxes contained 2195 briquettes with various logos – “TNT”, “Badboys”, “Gold” and a picture of a dolphin. Several Latvian citizens were detained for committing a criminal offense.

Already at that time, the police stated that the cargo of cocaine found in Koknese region was probably not intended for the Latvian market.
