Jewish Agency Shlichim (Israeli emissaries) helped the first group of new Israeli immigrants cross into Poland, and immediate preparations are underway to help many more.
The Jewish Agency for Israel announced on Saturday (February 26th) that it would open six Aliyah (immigration to Israel) processing stations at Ukrainian border crossings with four countries: Poland, Moldova, Romania and Hungary. These stations, operated in conjunction with Nativ and the Israeli Foreign Ministry, are intended to immediately aid the waves of immigration expected due to the war in Ukraine.
The Jewish Agency is also ready to increase the number of these stations without delay, if necessary.
Since the start of the war, the Jewish Agency has operated from a central Aliyah station in Lviv. It was the starting point for the first group of olim (immigrants) who crossed into Poland on Saturday with the help of Jewish Agency agents.
In accordance with the decision of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the Jewish Agency today also moved its immigration officials from Ukraine to the Polish side of the border. From there, they will travel daily to Ukraine, along with Israeli diplomatic teams, to continue assisting Ukrainian Jews who wish to immigrate to Israel in accordance with the Aliyah eligibility granted by Nativ.
The Jewish Agency is also preparing to temporarily house olim in hotels in countries bordering Ukraine, with support from the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), Keren Hayesod and other donors around the world.
The Jewish Agency works in coordination with theInternational Fellowship of Christians and Jewswhich helps arrange flights to Israel, and with the Ministry of Aliyah and Absorption, which assists with Aliyah and provides temporary accommodation in Israel.
After a grueling 16-hour process, the first group of olim from Ukraine entered Poland on February 26. The immigrants have been housed in a hotel near Warsaw where they will stay until they are flown to Israel. Upon arrival in Israel, the olim will be provided with temporary housing, with assistance from the Ministry of Aliyah and Absorption.
