What is the essence of the holiday
The Monk Athanasius of Athos was born in the city of Trebizond and very early became an orphan. He was brought up by a pious nun, and he tried to imitate his foster mother in everything – in the habits of monastic life, in fasting and in prayers. Later he was tonsured at the Kiminsky Monastery. According to legend, the Mother of God herself appeared to Athanasius several times.
In Rus’, Athanasius celebrated the feast of the Months. In the evening they went out into the street and watched the moon glow in the sky: it runs from place to place, changes color, then hides behind the clouds, then appears again. It was believed that this is how the month celebrates its day. Such a “game” foreshadowed a good harvest. They also said that if you watch the moon this evening, then the strength in a person will increase.

On this day, you should not gossip and discuss others. You can’t be on July 18 and stay at home alone. Try to avoid sharp objects on this day: knives, scissors, etc. And watch the children even more carefully than usual – there is a high probability of injury.

Oh, great sufferer and great devotee of Christ, our father Athanasius! With humility, we now bow the knees of our hearts and cry out to you: bring our prayer to the Merciful and Almighty God, and beg for us from His goodness everything that is useful for our souls and bodies: true faith, sincere hope, love without hypocrisy, during temptations – courage, in suffering – patience, in piety – success, so that we do not use the gifts of the All-Good God for evil, but for the glory of His holy name and for the glorification of your intercession for us. Save the holy church from schisms and heresies, strengthen the faithful, convince those who have gone astray to the path of true faith; save our homeland from enemy oppression and help our army in the fight.
Beseech the King of the reigning and the Lord of the reigning grace, strength and heavenly blessing to the helmsmen of our state, O saint of Christ, and grant peace and prosperity to our Ukraine. Do not forget, holy miracle worker, about this holy abode: preserve and protect it with your prayers from all evil. Oh, Saint of God, remember all those who approach your sacred cancer and grant them a happy end and inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, so that we glorify the God who is amazing among our saints, whom we glorify in three guises, to whom belongs all glory, honor and worship forever and ever. Amen.
