The situation on the Lebanese-Israeli border worsened on Tuesday night, after a barrage of rockets were fired from southern Lebanon towards Israel, before the Israeli army responded with artillery shells and incendiary shells.
A Lebanese military source indicated that an Israeli tank, opposite the town of Maroun al-Ras, was hit by a guided missile that led to it burning.
For its part, an official statement from the Israeli army said: “IDF tanks bombed two Hezbollah reconnaissance sites, in response to the firing of rocket shells from inside Lebanese territory towards Israel.”
The statement added: “The IDF is prepared for scenarios on all fronts and will continue to protect the residents of the State of Israel.”
The Israeli army also indicated its suspicion of firing Kornet shells from southern Lebanon towards an army troop carrier.
The Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, General Herzi Halevy, held a session to assess the situation in the Northern Command, accompanied by the Commander of the Northern Region and the commanders of the forces deployed on the northern front, within the framework of the IDF’s readiness on all fronts.
For its part, the Lebanese army said in a statement: “The outskirts of the Qulaiba and Al-Dhahira areas and other border areas in the Tire district were subjected to artillery shelling by the Israeli army, after rockets were launched from the Qlaila Plain towards the Palestinian territories.”
There is already a state of tension in Lebanon after the killing of 6 fighters along the border on Monday, including three Hezbollah members, an Israeli officer, and two Palestinian militants who had infiltrated Israel from Lebanese territory.
The United Nations Interim Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that it had detected a missile launch south of the city of Tire at approximately 5:30 pm local time, and urged all parties to exercise restraint.
