The eruption of the Canary Islands volcano is over

The end of the eruption over the weekend was confirmed by local officials.

The volcano has left extensive damage behind. In many places, the island is covered with a thick layer of ash, covering even entire houses.

The volcanic eruption began in September and lasted for 85 days and 18 hours. It ended as early as mid-December, but volcanologists needed time to make sure it would not start again.

“What I want to say can only be said in four words: the eruption of the volcano is over. That is the key. The eruption is over. It ended on the afternoon of December 13th. But we can only say that now that the Scientific Committee has been able to verify it with sufficient confidence. The lava is no longer flowing, there are no significant gas emissions, no significant underground shocks or significant surface deformation, ”said Julio Peress, a spokesman for the Canary Islands Regional Government.

No one was killed or injured in the eruption, but it did great damage. Destroyed hundreds of buildings and large agricultural areas, as well as blocked roads.
