The Era of Electric Cars Is Getting Closer, Will Manufacturers of Exhaust, Oil, et al be nervous?

Jakarta

Electric cars have fewer components when compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. If electric cars are increasingly used, it is feared that it will have an impact on the sale of components that are not needed by electric cars such as exhaust and oil. How do manufacturers respond?

Indonesia is entering the era of electric vehicles. Several automotive manufacturers such as Hyundai, Nissan, Lexus, and DFSK have marketed their electric car products in the country. If electric cars have become the main choice, then there will be fewer use of internal combustion engine cars. This will also affect the component industry such as exhaust and oil manufacturers. They are in danger of going out of business because they are no longer needed.

As explained by the General Chair of the Association of Automobile and Motorcycle Equipment Industries (GIIAM), Hamdhani Dzulkarnaen Salim, now there are already industries that will be affected by the presence of the vehicle electrification trend in the world. This component manufacturing industry can be considered as making spare parts which will not be absorbed by the environmentally friendly vehicle industry. But on the other hand, there are still component manufacturers that can adapt.

“That of the number of our members, the association, 28% are directly affected or he is currently making components for engines that will not exist later. But the remaining 19% they have to redesign or re-look and there is still the possibility ) (their products) will still be used,” said Hamdani, in the webinar Quo Vadis of the Indonesian Automotive Industry in the Electrification Era, recently.

Although the presence of electric cars will be affected, Hamdhani believes that it can also be an opportunity for the internal combustion vehicle component manufacturing industry to switch to making electric vehicle components.

“With the loss of the engine, then the oil supply, then the exhaust valve, and so on, of course this creates new opportunities, namely new components. There are battery packs, there are inverters, then electro motors, then DC converters, then there are also charging stations, and so on. All of these are new things which of course we consider as new opportunities, “explained Hamdhani.

“Then there are our members who are still optimistic, because they are still making components which of course will still be used, even though they have to be redesigned. For example brakes, where with the electro motor there will be different functions, not engine brakes anymore. Then also There is electronics, which will certainly change,” explained Hamdhani.
