The Equalizer 3 Takes the Top Spot at the North American Box Office

ATLANTA, Ga. (Telemundo Atlanta) – The third installment in the “Equalizer” franchise, starring Denzel Washington, topped the North American box office over the weekend with more than $34 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

By the end of Monday, which is a Labor Day holiday in the United States, Sony expects the total to rise to $42 million.

The holiday marks the end of Hollywood’s summer movie season, which will top $4 billion in ticket sales for the first time since the pandemic thanks in large part to “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” which continue to break records even after seven weeks in theaters.

This weekend, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” officially became the highest-grossing film of 2023 with more than $1.36 billion worldwide, surpassing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” while “Oppenheimer” , by Christopher Nolan, surpassed $850 million worldwide to become the number three film of the year and Nolan’s third highest-grossing.

“One of the biggest movie stars in the world took us out on a high note,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore media analyst. “Studios often go until Labor Day, but Sony was smart to choose this weekend to release ‘The Equalizer 3’.”

“The consistency of the Equalizer franchise is amazing,” Dergarabedian said.

Overseas, it grossed over $26 million, contributing to a worldwide opening of $60.6 million.

In second place, “Barbie” grossed $10.6 million over the weekend in the United States and Canada, bringing its domestic total to $609.5 million. “Oppenheimer” came in fifth on the national charts with an estimated $5.5 million. This brings its domestic total to $310.3 million and its global take to $851 million.
