The episode of extreme temperatures does not happen alone: sand from the Sahara affects France, health risks increase

According to air quality observation sites, a flow of dust from the Sahara accompanies the mass of hot air coming from the south which brings these exceptional temperatures for the month of June in France.

France should be affected by altitude winds laden with sand from this Thursday. The phenomenon should first concentrate on the south of the country before progressing towards the west and the center of France, as far as the Paris region. According to the models, this dust cloud phenomenon could well aggravate the effects of heat on organisms.

These episodes which are more and more frequent in France, as we can see especially since the beginning of the year are not without health risks. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) estimates that this dust is “a serious threat to human health. Especially since combined with extreme heat, the health risk is real due to a high level of particles suspended in the air.

In a study published in 2017, the Health Watch Institute of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Corsica (INVS) regions concluded that these winds could “introduce into the atmosphere microorganisms and other microbiological materials, such as pollen or fungi and molds”.

The phenomenon of rising dust from the Sahara currently observed is impressive. According to the models, the air flow loaded with sand would have reached the American coasts in recent hours, testifying to the global impact of these clouds in the atmosphere.
