The epidemiologist Prymula has a trade in medical devices. I don’t make anything, he defends himself

A new license appeared in Prymul’s trade register on June 17, a few weeks after he left the position of Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Health.

“I started the trades after leaving the ministry, when I wanted to leave for the private sector. I do not produce any medical material. I don’t make anything. I have it so that I can give a lecture, for example, ”Prymula told TN.cz.

However, Prymula did not go to the private sector and the goals of the authorization were not fulfilled. Instead, he accepted the position of Government Plenipotentiary for Science and Research at the Office of the Government. As a consultant, he still has some influence on anti-epidemiological measures and the setting of a strategy to combat coronavirus.

And Jiří Pospíšil, the former head of TOP09 and the current chairman of the Prague embassy, sees a certain problem in this. “If Mr. Prymula really makes medical devices and still trades with the state, then in my opinion it is a conflict of interest. It is difficult to accept that a person who decides on quarantine measures and wearing veils should simultaneously produce and distribute these products, ”he told the Pospíšil server.

The chairman of the opposition Pirates, Ivan Bartoš, speaks similarly. “Mr. Prymula should consider whether he is a health care entrepreneur or a government agent, both of which are conflicts of interest. Let us recall under what circumstances he ended up as the director of the University Hospital in Hradec Králové, when he was dismissed by the then Minister of Health due to a conflict of interest, ”Bartoš told Novinky.

Bartoš encountered an alleged conflict of interest in the Prymuls while running the Hradec Králové University Hospital. From this position he was to decide on the purchase of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, where the suppliers also cooperated with the company Biovomed sro, in which Prymula’s daughter Karolína sat. The epidemiologist then rejected the conflict of interest, interpreting his appeal as the result of a personal dispute.

But the head of the Pirates also added that it is not illegal to have a business license.

Prymula could manufacture, among other things, drapes, respirators or pacemakers, but emphasizes that it does not manufacture medical supplies, but only those parts of the trade that relate to counseling, professional studies, research and development in science and out-of-school education.
