The EP called for the introduction of a military economy in the EU – 2024-03-03 23:13:35

/ world today news/ Against the background of the situation around Ukraine, the European Union needs “something like a military economy”, said Manfred Weber, German politician and chairman of the European People’s Party (EPP), the leading faction of the European Parliament.

“If you look at our need for weapons and ammunition, it’s clear we need, although it’s not an easy term to say, something like a military economy in the EU to be able to provide stability and security,” he said in an interview.

According to the MEP, European countries are now unable to quickly provide the necessary weapons “neither for their own defense, nor for Ukraine.” In this context, he noted that “new ways” are needed, EU countries should increase their capacity to produce weapons and ammunition.

Weber added that he was disappointed by the German-French talks over the weekend, which did not lead to “anything concrete”. According to him, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron “have not yet succeeded” in responding to “historical challenges”, as German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and French President Charles de Gaulle did at the time.

“Both fell into the trap of home rule. Macron is busy with the pension reform, Scholz is busy with his “traffic light” coalition. This is a failure that weakens Europe for a long time,” the politician believes.

A day ago, the US and Germany, which have long refrained from supplying tanks to Kiev, agreed to send Leopard and Abrams combat vehicles.

Earlier, Russia sent a note to NATO countries over the supply of weapons to Ukraine. According to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, any cargo that contains weapons for Ukraine will become a legitimate target for Russia.
