The Environmental Impact of Printed Receipts in France: 30 Billion Receipts Printed Annually

Each year, 30 billion receipts, credit card payment receipts and vouchers are printed in France. The 12 billion receipts alone represent 150,000 tons of paper. That corresponds to 25 million felled trees and 18 billion liters of water consumed.

However, many French people immediately throw the papers away, especially when it comes to a bill for a small amount. In addition, the pieces of paper are often small and difficult to collect and recycle, according to the French agency for environment and energy management (ADEME). That is why a point is now being put behind it.

Postponed

The decision was postponed twice this year due to the discussion about inflation in France, but today was the day.

There is also criticism. After all, the printed receipts are used by many to keep family budgets under control and to check the correctness of bills, consumer associations say.

However, the printed ticket does not disappear completely. If you still want a printed ticket, just ask. But from now on, this has to be done explicitly. You can always ask to send the invoice electronically, for example by email or SMS.

Restaurants

In some cases, printing remains mandatory. This includes bills from restaurants and hotels. Even if you buy a product with a legal guarantee – such as a smartphone – or a service of more than 25 euros – just think of the hairdresser or the garage – a printed ticket remains an obligation.
