Many choose an electric car to be more eco-sustainable. However, electric mobility is green only “here and now”, it eliminates local emissions in the area in which it moves, but if we analyze the environment on a large scale we must also start taking other issues into consideration. Unless the vehicle charges directly from a solar, wind or hydroelectric system, it will have an environmental impact. Most of the electricity produced in Italy comes from natural gas and in this case there are emissions. Then there is the question of the metals with which the batteries are produced, for example lithium, nickel, cobalt and many others. Mining is anything but a green activity (leaving aside the issues of exploitation of labor, including child labor, and of poorer countries). The problem of emissions in this case is simply moved from the streets where we drive to the areas from which the material is extracted.
