Social networks have made it easier to share millions of recipes, but also the appearance of new culinary trends that are not always linked to the seasons of the products. It is the case of açaí, in fashion among ‘influencers’ but whose high demand is generating great environmental damage.
Many of the trending ‘superfoods’ come from Latin American crops. From the palm trees of the Brazilian Amazon comes the açaí, a food that we see more and more in the accounts of Spanish influencers. A decade ago Brazil exported about 40 tons while now it reaches 6,000 mainly because of a great marketing strategy.
However, the rapid increase in cultivation of this small purple fruit is causing damage to ecosystems and biological diversity. “These are foods that are made fashionable by the great press and double or triple their sales just because they are talked about a lot. It is totally marketing, a commercial strategy to put products in our diet“, explains a nutritionist to ‘Focus’.
