The last fertile plain of Malaga capital, a cinema corner like the Vega de Mestanza, has moved to the seventh art to vindicate its values and try to avoid, by shooting a short in which the neighbors have participated, the next construction in 20.8 hectares of their land of the new treatment plant in Málaga Norte.
As the retired teacher explains Mari Carmen Mestanza, granddaughter of the founders of this valley next to the Guadalhorce in the 20s of the last century, «since I am very daring, I told the photographer Gustavo Valverde why we didn’t make a short film, and he called Fernando Monteleone, from South Films and among the two have done it.
The dream, he says, would be to be able to present this short at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival. “The period is open until March 1,” he says.
In the short, which is currently in the post-production phase and of which a small preview can be seen on YouTube with the title of ‘Mestanza. The last Vega ‘, Mari Carmen Mestanza herself appears – «they have made me the main actress», she laughs – as well as a good number of neighbors, who appear in the short film applauding the fertile plain next to which the majority have grown up.
«We wanted to transmit the tragedy of the Vega de Mestanza and the tragedy of the neighbors. The pity is that Malaga does not know it and that we are not able to bring it to the public, that is why we think of the Malaga Film Festival, even if we know that we have to pass a screening, ”explains the teacher.
In any case, he underlines that the neighbors are already winning with this experience “because they have made a beautiful short and have participated a lot”.
Charlot, in Mestanza
But the relationship of the last plain of Malaga capital with the cinema does not end with the short film, because have wanted to unite the centenary of the famous movie ‘El chico’ by Charlot with the century that, just around the corner, in 2024, will meet the Vega de Mestanza.
For this reason, they have devised a photoshoot with a family from Alhaurín de la Torre, with the father dressed as the tramp played by Charles Chaplin and the mother, about to give birth in real life.
“We we have burned the ships, without Vega we have no life “, sums up the teacher, who says that they are waiting for the Board to present documentation in the dispute that the neighbors have raised to avoid the works of the treatment plant.
