The Ensors are becoming gender neutral: no ‘best actor’ or ‘bes… (Oostende)

The Ensors, the most important Flemish TV and film awards, will be gender neutral. The categories best actor and best actress are therefore merged, so that in the coming edition only awards will be awarded for the ‘best acting performance’. The organizers announced this on Friday.

The categories ‘Best Acting Performance in a Leading Role’ and ‘Best Acting Performance in a Supporting Role’ will be created for both film and television. Because there was no prize for supporting roles in the past, the number of awards awarded remains the same.

The organizers are thus following the example of the Berlin Film Festival, which already scrapped the separate awards for actors and actresses earlier this year. The Golden Calfs, the Dutch film awards that will be awarded today/Friday, are also gender neutral for the first time this year.

In addition, the Ensors undergo some other changes. Remakes will also be eligible from next year. The Ensor for ‘debut of the year’ is renamed ‘promise of the year’. The category ‘international breakthrough of the year’ is then called ‘international achievement of the year’, because more and more Flemish talent is not able to work abroad once, but often remains actively involved.

The Ensors will be awarded on January 29, on the closing day of the Ostend Film Festival. The nominations will be announced on January 3.
