Jakarta –
A video showing a strange circle of black smoke hovering over the Russian capital has gone viral on social media. This sighting caused a commotion and sparked various questions from netizens.
Adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko shared this video on his Twitter account on Monday (27/3) and has been viewed by millions of people. The video shows a thick black ring over Moscow, and it gradually fades.
Similar videos recorded by local residents have also appeared. One of the videos from Twitter users, showing the dark circle from different angles and has been watched hundreds of thousands of times. The ring is seen briefly rising into the sky in this video.
Despite various speculations among social media users, some people suspect the video is fake, some call it proof of the existence of aliens.
But as quoted from Newsweek, Friday (31/3/2023) this kind of thing is apparently not the first time this has happened. Similar phenomena have been seen many times around the world.
In 2014, according to a BBC report, a similar sight was observed near Warwick Castle in Warwick, England. A black ring reportedly hovered in the sky for approximately three minutes and was captured by a 16-year-old girl on her smartphone camera.
This incident again sparked speculation and concern from the people who saw the picture. Some have suggested it could be a swarm of insects or birds. Other netizens said it was a natural weather phenomenon. However, this theory is refuted by the Met Office weather forecasting service.
“There is no meteorological reason why this might have happened. And there was nothing unusual in the sky that day, we have checked,” a Met Office spokesperson said in a statement.
Finally a statement from Warwick Castle explained the phenomenon and said it was the result of testing pyrotechnics and caused a ‘fire effect’.
A similar incident in Pakistan also caused a stir in 2020. The appearance of a thin black ring seen in the sky over Lahore, Pakistan, caused concern.
Despite those concerns, the report highlights multiple plausible explanations. Industrial disturbances such as exploding power transformers can cause this effect.
The report also notes that black rings can also be caused by the use of fireworks, and states that swirls of smoke require blasting through a circular structure, such as through a factory chimney or homemade trash can.
