Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday (20/4) local time, that Russia successfully tested intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Sarmat. Putin said a weapon capable of carrying a nuclear payload would make the Kremlin’s enemies “think twice.”
Reported from the news agency AFPThursday (21/4/2022), Sarmat – nicknamed Satan 2 by Western analysts – is one of the next generation missiles that Putin calls “invincible,” and which also includes the hypersonic Kinzhal and Avangard missiles.
Last month, Russia said it had used Kinzhal for the first time in warfare to strike targets in Ukraine, where Russian forces have been engaged in special military operations since February 24.
“I congratulate you on the successful launch of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile,” Putin told the Russian military in televised remarks on Wednesday.
“This truly unique weapon will strengthen the combat potential of our armed forces, ensure the security of Russia from external threats and make those who, in the heat of aggressive rhetoric, try to threaten our country, think twice,” Putin said.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that the test intercontinental missile it “successfully” took place at the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia.
“The Sarmat is the most powerful missile with the longest target destruction range in the world, which will significantly increase the combat power of our country’s strategic nuclear forces,” the ministry said.
