Kyiv City Hall has begun dismantling a Soviet-era historical monument dedicated to Ukraine-Russia friendship, AFP reported, noting after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
AFP reporters saw the head of one of the two figures in the monument, depicting a Russian and Ukrainian worker, symbolically holding hands, fall off with a crane. On the monument erected in the center of Kyiv, it says “Friendship between nations”.
“Today we started the dismantling and in the evening we plan to finish it. We are removing the bronze sculpture of the two workers,” Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote in a Telegram, quoted by TASS, BTA reports.
“Eight meters of metal with the inscription” Friendship between nations “dismantled. It is symbolic that the head of the Russian worker fell,” Klitschko wrote.
The mayor of Kiev justified the decision to remove the monument with Moscow’s desire to “destroy the Ukrainian state” with its invasion, which began on February 24.
