The daily strip was an instant hit, and other newspapers and magazines jumped on the bandwagon as well. Marc Sleen with “Nero”, Jef Nys with “Jommeke”, Pom with “Piet Pienter and Bert Bibber” or Merho with “De peekaboo”.
“Willy Vandersteen was the most important; he placed the headlights and the others followed,” says journalist and comic book author Toon Horsten. Suske and Wiske crossed the border and even made it into Dutch newspapers.
