The end of the monopoly in the gas market: what is changing today for citizens and businesses

After 20 years in the company “Latvian gas“was the right to be the only gas supplier in Latvia, the natural gas market is opened to free competition from Monday.

This means that both businesses and citizens will have the right to choose from which trader to buy gas. Initially, it is mandatory for legal entities to choose a trader, but the choice of a household can be postponed to a later date.

The aim of market opening is to increase Latvia’s energy security, ensure competition and permanent supplies in the gas market, as well as strengthen it European Union single market for natural gas, emphasizes the Ministry of Economy. However, this process was not easy for Latvia.
