In April 2024, it will be the end of the green sticker on car windshields: here is what this will change concretely for motorists.
This is a measure that has been expected for several years, both on the side of motorists and that of insurers: from April 1, 2024it will finally be end of green sticker. From this date, the Government will put an end to the obligation to display the butterfly of the automobile insurance certificate on the windshields of vehicles.
However, not displaying this document does not mean that it will no longer be compulsory to take out insurance, quite the contrary: it will always be compulsory to take out, at a minimum, third-party insurance, also called civil liability.
Car insurance: no more sticker to display on the windshield
If it will no longer be necessary to display the green sticker on your windscreen, the police will still be able to check the subscription to an insurance contract by consulting the FVA: the File of Insured Vehicles, which must be updated within 72 hours by insurers, when you take out car insurance. A simple check of the registration number of your vehicle will therefore allow the agents to know the validity of your insurance contract.
However, if you have just taken out car insurance, it is possible that this centralized computer file will not yet be up to date during this 72-hour period. To avoid any trouble during a roadside check, your insurer will then send you a paper insurance certificate during any new subscription, to keep with you or in your glove compartment.
In addition, the traditional car insurance certificate should always be available in a dematerialized version, which is essential for traveling outside France with your car, in the event of an inspection by law enforcement agencies abroad, who theoretically do not have access to the FVA. So all you need to do isprint this document to facilitate checks during your trip.
End of the green sticker: pay attention to the checks!
In addition to the end of the green sticker on our windshields, the Highway Code will be updated, and two tickets will be waived : the fixed fine of €35 (2nd class) for non-affixing of the insurance certificate to the windscreen, as well as the fixed fine of €135 (4th class) for non-presentation of the valid insurance certificate when the green sticker is not present on the windscreen.
In return, a new method of control should see the light of day: the automated control of insurance default. Indeed, automatic speed cameras could well, in the future, check that your vehicle is well insured: they will simply have to question the FVA with your registration number, to ensure that an insurance contract is indeed associated with it.
According to article L 324-2 of the Highway Code, driving without insurance is an offense punishable by a fine of 3,750 euros. In practice, you risk a fixed fine of €500, which can be reduced to €400 or increased to €1,000 depending on the payment period.
