A sad year in the technology media industry. After the Bauer publisher announces the closure of CD-Action, another well-known title disappears from the map. This is the PCLab.pl computer service, managed by the Ringier Axel Springer Polska group.
“You are reading the latest article published in the PCLab.pl website. We are changing, in line with the company’s strategy, we focus on one strong brand, integrating all our technology websites” – writes Arkadiusz Świostek, the current editor-in-chief of PCLab.pl. As the further part of the announcement shows, the company wants to focus on the development of the Komputer Świat brand, leaving only archival materials at PCLab.pl.
PCLab.pl was perceived by many as the most competent source of information about computer components. He specialized in multi-page tests of components such as processors or graphics cards, which often contained several hundred test measurements per piece. In its peak period, it recorded over 4 million unique users per month.
It was founded in 2002 by Paweł Pilarczyk, and in 2009 it was taken over by Onet. Pilarczyk remained the editor-in-chief years ago. He resigned at the end of 2019.
It has been clear for a long time that RASP is systematically aggregating its technology services under the Komputer Świat brand. It began with the merger with the service Technologie.onet.pl (formerly Technowinki), thanks to which popular science texts began to appear in the Catholic Church. about militaria and space exploration. Now the PCLab.pl portfolio is added to it, and therefore, above all, in-depth equipment tests and reviews.
At least in theory – because in practice it is difficult to assess how much enthusiastic gaze can be transferred to a more horizontal reader. Even assuming that there will be no job cuts and current journalists of PCLab.pl will be fully incorporated into the ranks of Komputer Świat, there is no certainty that creating specialized content will pay off to RASP.
I say goodbye to PCLab.pl with an uncovered tear in my eye. This is because the website in which I had the opportunity to debut in the “big” media. We are also trying to encourage Paweł Pilarczyk. He promised to come back to us as soon as he finds some free time, so this article will certainly be expanded with additional comment.
