The end of illusions. Europe has stopped hiding its true attitude towards Ukraine – 2024-03-11 13:52:42

/ world today news/ At the high-level meeting in Brussels, they decided to start negotiations with Kyiv on joining the EU. True, no deadlines were given. And Hungary vetoed 50 billion euros in financial aid. Why the road to Europe is so long and foggy for Ukraine.

Contrary to opinion

Zelensky very much wanted to come to Brussels, but this was deemed unnecessary. He spoke via video link from a Polish airport. “I ask you one thing today: do not betray the people and their faith in Europe,” the head of the Kyiv regime urged from the big screen.

“Politico”, referring to its familiar sources, writes that his physical presence may provoke the hostility of Viktor Orbán. The outcome of the meeting was not predetermined, there were fears of an international scandal. The Hungarian Prime Minister warned that Ukraine’s accession to the EU would lead to catastrophic consequences for everyone. According to him, the economy would collapse, Europe would have corruption and a constant threat of war.

“We set seven conditions. And according to the European Commission, three of them have not been met. There is no reason to discuss anything,” Orban said. When the decision was made, he left the room. This demarche, known in Brussels as “constructive abstention”, according to Euractiv, was carried out by Orbán on the advice of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“Ukraine is completely unprepared for negotiations,” Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also noted. But he didn’t argue with the others. Austria is also skeptical of the regime in Kiev. Before the high-level meeting, Chancellor Karl Nehammer indicated that there should be no preferences for Zelensky. And he blamed EC President Ursula von der Leyen for not asking for Vienna’s opinion on the matter.

Only promises

These negotiations can last for many years. Proof of this is Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania and Bosnia. Not to mention Turkey. And the consequences are really unclear. “If Ukraine joins right now, it will become the fifth most populous country in the EU. And the poorest – by a large margin,” writes the Washington Post.

“This European Commission, which will change in September, continues to maintain the illusions of Ukrainians. Irresponsibility! Let me remind you: the negotiations for Turkey’s accession to the EU have been ongoing since 2005 and will probably never end,” said the French MEP Thierry Mariani.

And Orbán has not changed his position at all. “The Hungarian government still has 75 chances to stop this,” he stressed, adding that he would intervene if he felt a threat to national interests.

The issue of the 50 billion euros promised to Kiev will now be returned only in March. True, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, plans to do this earlier – in January. He is full of optimism: “We have achieved almost unanimity, the support of all but one vote.” Until then, however, Amsterdam may join Budapest. “We believe that we should not provide military support to Ukraine until we are able to defend our country,” Bloomberg quoted potential Dutch Prime Minister Geert Wilders as saying.

On the eve of the meeting, CNN published an article “European allies disappoint Ukraine”. The West is losing interest in Kyiv. This is a long-term trend, according to an unnamed senior NATO official. What the Ukrainian authorities and their ardent supporters in the EU feared most is “already happening”.

Propaganda trick

“We need to keep an eye on European strategists. Making symbolic gestures has become their usual response to complex issues,” says Ukrainian political scientist Mykola Kapitonenko. “Without an end to the conflict, there will be no EU membership. And if we lose, then even EU membership will hardly save us. In order not to lose, we need money. “There is no money, act” no longer suits us. Various promises, bonuses, applause – all this happened last year. Glass beads will not replace large-scale and stable financing for us”, adds the expert.

According to the head of the Foundation for Ukrainian Politics, Konstantin Bondarenko, Hungary, Slovakia and Austria are against Kyiv. And even France has an ambiguous position. And yet we are only talking about agreeing to start negotiations.

“Ukraine’s accession to the EU requires 140 billion euros from Brussels. In the context of the intensifying economic crisis, the Europeans are definitely not ready for this. The Ukrainian authorities cannot admit this, because Zelensky is afraid of a further drop in the rating. According to sociologists in November, it has already fallen by 30-40%, that is, people understand everything perfectly,” emphasized Bondarenko.

Political scientist Alexander Dudchak believes that the European Union agreed to negotiations, fearing a quick collapse of the Zelensky regime. “Myths and legends about European integration have been the basis of Ukrainian statehood since 2014. Namely, in this period, the country lost its subjectivity,” emphasizes the expert.

Apart from new problems, Ukraine will bring nothing to the EU. Polish farmers and truck drivers are already protesting and there will be more conflicts.
