The End of Cheaper Shopping in Poland: How to Navigate the Currency and VAT Changes

The possibility of popular purchases in Poland, which are much cheaper compared to Czech stores, will probably end soon. People will have to go back to domestic stores and buy overpriced food again.

Does it have a solution?

The reason is primarily the not very good condition of the Czech economy, to which our currency, in the form of the Czech crown, is understandably linked. It has already begun to weaken considerably in recent months, while an even greater drop is expected.

According to economist Lukáš Kovanda, the Swiss bank UBS issued a very specific recommendation. He recommends betting on the expected decline of the Czech crown, specifically against the Polish zloty.

Are you planning to go shopping in Poland next year as well? Exchange your crowns for zlotys now, as the Czech currency will weaken particularly significantly against the Polish one in the coming period,” Kovanda presents a certain solution, which is certainly not for everyone. Moreover, this speculation may not work out.

Most people in Polish shops pay in a simple way, namely with their Czech bank card. The payment is always converted at the current exchange rate of the zloty against the koruna. Already in recent weeks, Czech customers have been able to watch how their purchases at their neighbors are becoming more expensive.

Other negative effects

It could then be even more pronounced next year. Bank UBS assumes that the Czech currency should weaken against the zloty by some six percent, but an even bigger drop cannot be ruled out. The Czech economy is currently noticeably underperforming, unlike the Polish economy, which continues to grow.

This is not the only factor that affects prices in Poland. Already at the beginning of next year, value added tax, which has been zero for some time now, will again be applied to food, which also benefited the Czechs during their purchases.

Cumulatively, these two effects could cause price increases in Polish stores for the Czech customer by up to 20%. The prices there would thus be significantly closer to those in domestic stores, and trips abroad would probably no longer be worthwhile.
