Always on the A list in our hearts.
Pour one out for Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, the revolutionary mobile game that proved that making games for women is serious business. As of today, the game is no longer available in app stores and will no longer offer in-app purchases. A post on the game’s official forums stated that current players would be able to use the app and its in-game currency until April 8, 2024.
When Kardashian announced the game in 2014, the press and general public mocked its simple concept: climb the Hollywood ladder under Kardashian’s mentorship and assume her rightful place as an A-list celebrity. But Kardashian would have the last laugh. Within six months, the game had grossed over $74 million and become a certifiable phenomenon.
In 2019, Polygon’s Petrana Radulovic named it one of the 100 best games of the decade, noting that it was “unapologetically geared toward young women” and “was perhaps the biggest indication that a mobile game for girls could succeed.”
The game declined in popularity over the years, but it still had a cult following. One report suggested that the game could have grossed over $8 million per year as recently as 2018.
According to players, the developer’s lack of interest in the game has been felt in recent months. Just yesterday, a new petition on Change.org demanded more frequent updates to the game. “As an avid fan of the game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, I am deeply saddened by its current state,” the petition author wrote . “These updates weren’t just about new content; they aimed to maintain community engagement and enthusiasm. »
In a statement to TMZ, Kardashian said: “I am so grateful from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has loved and played Kim Kardashian: Hollywood over the past 10 years…I will forever be inspired by this community we built together . »
