The End of an Era: BMW’s Munich Plant Stops Production of Internal Combustion Engines

As pointed out by the website BR24following the events in Bavaria, the BMW Group’s production of internal combustion engines in Munich ends.

The factory should produce electric cars in the future, while plants in Great Britain and Austria will be entrusted with the production of internal combustion engines. This is the end of a tradition lasting over 60 years for BMW.

The last internal combustion engine produced in Munich was to be a fork eight cylinder. Roughly 1,200 employees who were responsible for the production of internal combustion engines should be retrained and placed in new jobs.

However, stopping the production of BMW internal combustion engines in Munich is not a blow out of the blue. The automaker already hinted at these plans in 2020, with the reason being to acquire additional space for the production of purely electric cars in Germany.

In any case, BMW is not completely done with combustion engines. After all, unlike many competing manufacturers, the automaker has not even set a fixed date when it wants to say goodbye to combustion engines, and it is so likely that it will stick to them as long as possible.

At least in the near future, the production of combustion engines for BMW Group cars should take place at the Hams Hall plant in the UK, where V8 engines are also produced, and at the Steyr plant in Austria.
